Shimmer and Matte

Hey there. Sorry for being away for so long, but I'm back!

How is the Christmas season treating you? For me, I got the holiday bug a bit later than other people but now I just realized how close Christmas is. And speaking of the holidays, I can't believe the good deals that are being offered right now - please don't be like me who spent most of her money on makeup!

Anyway, my long absence can not be justified with any excuse but I just wanna put it out there that school has really kept me chained - tons of papers written, projects presented, and quizzes answered - all of which has left me sleepless for several days. Thankfully, school is finally over for the year - well, it has been since more than a week ago, but I've been hanging out with friends days after finals week ended - so I wasn't able to write immediately. Fortunately, I'm back with a lot of things that I think are worth blogging about.

Meanwhile, since I do not have anything specific to upload as of yet, I thought I'd share with you things that I bought last week from the World Bazaar Festival held at World Trade Center Manila. All of the things I will be showing are stuff that I got for myself - so to speak, a reward for all the hard work that I exerted for this year. My high school best friends went with me; it has become a tradition of ours to go to bazaars during the holiday season.

Ta-daa! Here is an overview of the stuff that I got; most of them are impulse buys but I love them all nonetheless.

1. Fanny Serrano Cosmetics Angled Liner Brush (Php 50)
FS Cosmetics had a booth and they were selling everything for such a low price! They told us that the reason why is because of their new branding - from Fanny Serrano to Features & Shades - and that they were selling them discounted because all of the items had the old packaging. Unfortunately, I did not buy any makeup because I heard from my mom that relatives might be giving me some for Christmas *fingers crossed*

The brush was originally Php 100 but it was being sold for half the price. The brush is too stiff and it hurts my eyes in terms of eyeliner application but it works so well for eyebrow powder/pomade application.

2. Scents for Senses Diffuser Oils (Php 100 | L-R: Cherry Blossom, Sandalwood, Baby Powder)
I have a diffuser at my condo and the current scent that I have is almost out; I was contemplating on getting a big bottle but decided to go for smaller bottles instead so that I can get more variety. My favorite is definitely Cherry Blossom!

3. Unbranded 12-pc Eye Makeup Set (Php 850 from Chedelyn Cosmetics)
I've always wanted to buy the Riot Brushes complete eye set and I was hoping they'd be there at the World Bazaar Festival. They weren't there, sadly, but I chanced upon this set from Chedelyn Cosmetics' booth and I knew right away that these are the exact set from the former, except that it's so much cheaper!
The blending brushes are a bit prickly which is expected because the bristles are made of natural goat hair, but they still blend shadow easily and I couldn't ask for more.

4. Clip-on Ring Light (Php 400)

This was actually what I was hoping to find when I went to the bazaar. Ever since I've started creating different makeup looks, I've always had trouble taking pictures taking at night because my ceiling light isn't that great and my impromptu light (emergency light) washes me out too much. I'm so happy that I found this being sold for the stated price because Instagram sellers would usually sell them for Php 650 and above.

5. Keychain Holders (Php 50 each)
Truth be told, this was an impulse buy. I wasn't planning on getting any trinkets but this just caught my eye and immediately bought the holder in pink and black - I didn't even know whom to give the other one two but my sister asked for the other one so there's that.
Look how cute it is!

6. Character Socks (Php 100)
For Christmas this year, I decided to get all of my friends cute socks! I wasn't planning on buying anything for myself but I just couldn't stop myself from getting a pair (because, hello, Totoro).

7. Real Techniques Sculpting Set from Pretty Girl Manila (Php 450)
When I first heard the price of this brush set, I was like "o m g is this real life". I immediately bought it even though RT brush sets usually retail for Php 1000 or more because I was sure that the one I bought was legit because it came from a pretty reliable reseller. When I opened it, I found that some of the letters have already faded and maybe that was why it was discounted. I even checked the website and blog posts to see if my brush set was original - and thankfully, it is. I still can't believe I got them for such a low price!

8. Travel Organizer (Php 150)
I rarely travel but when I saw this, I thought it would be great to use for whenever I go back and forth from the province to the city especially since my skincare products have been increasing. It fits all of my necessities and I love that I can easily throw this into my bag when I need to go somewhere.

That's it for my haul! Since then, I have bought more products that I think might be good for another post. Until then, kindly look forward to my future updates. If you want to see a review on any of the products that you see here, kindly let me know down below. Thank you so much for reading and I wish you all a very merry holiday!

Happy Sunday, everyone! I hope every single one of you is having a nice time. Usually, I'd post updates on a Saturday but because school has been very hectic lately, I haven't been able to write any beauty-related entries. I didn't want to break my streak of updating weekly, so I thought I'll just share  about how my Sunday is going so far; I hope it's not too late! A personal post every now and then wouldn't hurt, right?

my notes and the PowerPoint files my professor sent us for tomorrow's quiz. Wish me luck!
writing this blog post.
listening to the Musical Therapy playlist in Spotify. Who else likes to listen to wordless music whenever they're studying?
thinking about the future a lot lately. It feels as if everyone else is moving ahead and I'm still stuck here not knowing what I want to do just yet.
smelling my Mad About You body spray. I may have gone overboard spraying it awhile ago.
wishing that I could finish studying everything before midnight and have time to prepare for my project defense which is also tomorrow. *cries a river*
hoping to feel inspired again.
wearing a comfy collared shirt and shorts because I went out awhile ago.
loving the first season of How To Get Away With Murder! I definitely understand where the hype is coming from; I personally like crime scene investigation shows and this is just right up my alley. It's been a long time since I've been so passionate about a TV show. Definitely recommend!
wanting to go to the dermatologist as well as the dentist to have my braces adjusted but I've always been having Friday makeup classes which clashes with the doctors' schedules. :-(
needing time to finish all my school requirements that are due this week. Too many!
feeling like I'm drowning from all the school work that I have yet to finish.
clicking through the PowerPoint files because I can't afford to do anything else right after writing this post, unfortunately.

Well, that's it for today's Sunday currently! I'm sorry if you feel that I'm complaining too much, but these are indeed what I'm feeling right now. But, thank you if you stuck through until the end of this list. Hopefully, the next Sunday currently will contain a lot more positive energy.

Contouring isn't going away anytime soon. If you asked me years ago what contouring was, the look of confusion would register on my face - after all, it was a trade secret that only beauty professionals knew about. However, when media star Kim Kardashian shared her beauty technique of shading and highlighting, everyone went crazy and jumped into the bandwagon. That was years ago, and up until now, beauty influencers are still doing it. The market right now is saturated with tons of contouring products - even the drugstore scene is picking up! - but one that still stands out is the Kat Von D Shade & Light Contour Palette.
Price: $46
Bought from: Given as a gift
Expiration: 12 months after opening
Net Wt.: Light shades - 2.3g each || Shadow shades - 4.5g each
The palette is housed in a box that shares the same design. The logo is embossed and the color scheme is black and silver. It definitely screams Kat Von D to me.

It also comes with a guide card which contains the palette information, the shade names, and tips on how to contour the face. I think the guide card is very useful for beginners. Kat Von D created a complementing shade and light makeup brush but you have to buy it separately.

PACKAGING

Again, the logo is embossed and has a matte black and silver scheme. I honestly love the design - it's classy but it isn't your typical pretty packaging; it has a badass feel that suits it so well specially since Kat Von D always gives off that vibe. It's also important to note that the packaging is made out of cardboard; however, it doesn't feel flimsy despite the material used. The only downside is that the palette tends to become dirty pretty fast.

At the back, you will see the corresponding shade names and other product information such as net weight and expiration date.

The mirror is quite big and of good quality, too. I don't normally use it though as the mirror always gets dirty from the powders.

PRODUCT

Top (L-R): Lucid, Lyric Levitation
Bottom (L-R): Sombre, Shadowplay, Subconscious
There are 6 matte shades in the palette - 3 for highlighting and 3 for contouring. Each have different undertones which means that it'll will work for a lot of people. In my opinion, it's a very versatile palette - it contains shades that are great for contouring as well as bronzing. I can't speak for every skin tone out there but from what I see, the colors are easily sheered out or built up to suit even the darkest or lightest of skin. Still, if the other colors won't work for you, they work great as eyeshadow.

As for beginner makeup artists, this would be a nice palette to add to your collection because it caters to all types of skin tones and this is good to bring with you if you're packing light.

Above is a swatch of the Light powders. As you can see, they are very pigmented and creamy. You'd think that they'd be so hard to blend out due to the amount of pigmentation but the powders do just the opposite and they highlight the face beautifully.

They tend to have a lot of fallout but it isn't an indicator of chalkiness; rather, I believe it's like that because the powders are so soft and finely-milled.

Above are swatches of the powders. I love that the shade names either start with an S (for shading powders) or an L (for highlighting powders). It makes remembering the shade names easier.

Lucid - Lucid is your typical neutral pink highlight. This works well for those who have very fair skin and for those who have cool-toned, light skin.

Lyric - Lyric is the perfect banana shade that suits medium to dark skin and warm-toned, light skin. What I love most about it is that it isn't too yellow but is still able to brighten the undereye.

Levitation - Ahh, this will highlight deep skin tones beautifully. It has a salmon tone to it which means that it will also work as a dark undereye corrector in a pinch.

Sombre - This shade is your cool-toned taupe brown, perfect for chiseling out the cheekbones. I personally don't like taupe colors for my face because they make me look muddy so I only concentrate this on the hollows of my cheekbones and on my nose.

Shadowplay - Shadowplay is your true medium brown - it can work as a bronzer when applied lighthandedly or as a natural-looking contour shade. I personally like to use this to contour my forehead and use this underneath Sombre to tone down the taupe-ness of it.

Subconscious - This shade is too dark for my NC35-NC40 skin but I see myself wearing this if I become tan over the summer. It is the deeper, warmer-but-still-close-to-neutral version of Shadowplay. It is perfect for skin tones NC42 and above. I also like to use this as eyeshadow.

OBSERVATIONS

The highlight shades are indeed brightening. However, I do not recommend using them to bake or set the undereyes. Rather, I would use these powders to wipe off excess powder from baking. As for setting the undereye, it's better to set your base first with a transluscent powder and then layer this on top. I find that the powder tends to cling on to certain areas of my undereye if I use it immediately on top of cream products. I also suggest that you apply with a light hand as these powders tend to become cakey - anyway, you don't need that much in the first place.

As for the contour shades, I have no complaints about them. They're pigmented, buildable and blendable.

They last for a long time, considering I have oily skin. I can't say as to whether it accentuates dry patches or whatnot, but for people who have oily skin and/or for those who are looking for a contouring product that can last all day, this palette is highly recommended! Unfortunately, this seems to break me out so people with sensitive skin might want to swatch them first at the stores or do research before buying.

Overall, I think this palette suits medium skin tone best as they are the ones I see that are able to make use of all the shades. Extremely fair or deep-skinned people may say they are not able to use the other shades. Personally, I still think they work extremely well as eyeshadow if you can't find any use for the other shades; other than that, I strongly believe that they are still workable when used with a light hand (for fair skin) and are easily buildable for darker skin tones.

THE GOOD
reasonably-priced for the amount of product that you get
caters from beginners to professionals
good selection of shades
highly pigmented, blendable, and buildable
convenient packaging
lasta all day

THE BAD
not available in the Philippines
fallout (I don't mind but I put it here anyway)
packaging becomes dirty really easily
broke me out

OVERALL...
If this didn't break me out, I would have given it a perfect score. However, this is still a product that is worth the buy and definitely something that I would recommend (if you don't have sensitive skin)!

RATING:
4.5/5

Hope you liked this review! Have you used this palette before? What was your experience with it? If not, what is your go-to contouring product? Let me know down below in the comments section! x
