Shimmer and Matte

uhm. Powered by Blogger.
Contouring isn't going away anytime soon. If you asked me years ago what contouring was, the look of confusion would register on my face - after all, it was a trade secret that only beauty professionals knew about. However, when media star Kim Kardashian shared her beauty technique of shading and highlighting, everyone went crazy and jumped into the bandwagon. That was years ago, and up until now, beauty influencers are still doing it. The market right now is saturated with tons of contouring products - even the drugstore scene is picking up! - but one that still stands out is the Kat Von D Shade & Light Contour Palette.
Price: $46
Bought from: Given as a gift
Expiration: 12 months after opening
Net Wt.: Light shades - 2.3g each || Shadow shades - 4.5g each
The palette is housed in a box that shares the same design. The logo is embossed and the color scheme is black and silver. It definitely screams Kat Von D to me.

It also comes with a guide card which contains the palette information, the shade names, and tips on how to contour the face. I think the guide card is very useful for beginners. Kat Von D created a complementing shade and light makeup brush but you have to buy it separately.

PACKAGING

Again, the logo is embossed and has a matte black and silver scheme. I honestly love the design - it's classy but it isn't your typical pretty packaging; it has a badass feel that suits it so well specially since Kat Von D always gives off that vibe. It's also important to note that the packaging is made out of cardboard; however, it doesn't feel flimsy despite the material used. The only downside is that the palette tends to become dirty pretty fast.

At the back, you will see the corresponding shade names and other product information such as net weight and expiration date.

The mirror is quite big and of good quality, too. I don't normally use it though as the mirror always gets dirty from the powders.

PRODUCT

Top (L-R): Lucid, Lyric Levitation
Bottom (L-R): Sombre, Shadowplay, Subconscious
There are 6 matte shades in the palette - 3 for highlighting and 3 for contouring. Each have different undertones which means that it'll will work for a lot of people. In my opinion, it's a very versatile palette - it contains shades that are great for contouring as well as bronzing. I can't speak for every skin tone out there but from what I see, the colors are easily sheered out or built up to suit even the darkest or lightest of skin. Still, if the other colors won't work for you, they work great as eyeshadow.

As for beginner makeup artists, this would be a nice palette to add to your collection because it caters to all types of skin tones and this is good to bring with you if you're packing light.

Above is a swatch of the Light powders. As you can see, they are very pigmented and creamy. You'd think that they'd be so hard to blend out due to the amount of pigmentation but the powders do just the opposite and they highlight the face beautifully.

They tend to have a lot of fallout but it isn't an indicator of chalkiness; rather, I believe it's like that because the powders are so soft and finely-milled.

Above are swatches of the powders. I love that the shade names either start with an S (for shading powders) or an L (for highlighting powders). It makes remembering the shade names easier.

Lucid - Lucid is your typical neutral pink highlight. This works well for those who have very fair skin and for those who have cool-toned, light skin.

Lyric - Lyric is the perfect banana shade that suits medium to dark skin and warm-toned, light skin. What I love most about it is that it isn't too yellow but is still able to brighten the undereye.

Levitation - Ahh, this will highlight deep skin tones beautifully. It has a salmon tone to it which means that it will also work as a dark undereye corrector in a pinch.

Sombre - This shade is your cool-toned taupe brown, perfect for chiseling out the cheekbones. I personally don't like taupe colors for my face because they make me look muddy so I only concentrate this on the hollows of my cheekbones and on my nose.

Shadowplay - Shadowplay is your true medium brown - it can work as a bronzer when applied lighthandedly or as a natural-looking contour shade. I personally like to use this to contour my forehead and use this underneath Sombre to tone down the taupe-ness of it.

Subconscious - This shade is too dark for my NC35-NC40 skin but I see myself wearing this if I become tan over the summer. It is the deeper, warmer-but-still-close-to-neutral version of Shadowplay. It is perfect for skin tones NC42 and above. I also like to use this as eyeshadow.

OBSERVATIONS

The highlight shades are indeed brightening. However, I do not recommend using them to bake or set the undereyes. Rather, I would use these powders to wipe off excess powder from baking. As for setting the undereye, it's better to set your base first with a transluscent powder and then layer this on top. I find that the powder tends to cling on to certain areas of my undereye if I use it immediately on top of cream products. I also suggest that you apply with a light hand as these powders tend to become cakey - anyway, you don't need that much in the first place.

As for the contour shades, I have no complaints about them. They're pigmented, buildable and blendable.

They last for a long time, considering I have oily skin. I can't say as to whether it accentuates dry patches or whatnot, but for people who have oily skin and/or for those who are looking for a contouring product that can last all day, this palette is highly recommended! Unfortunately, this seems to break me out so people with sensitive skin might want to swatch them first at the stores or do research before buying.

Overall, I think this palette suits medium skin tone best as they are the ones I see that are able to make use of all the shades. Extremely fair or deep-skinned people may say they are not able to use the other shades. Personally, I still think they work extremely well as eyeshadow if you can't find any use for the other shades; other than that, I strongly believe that they are still workable when used with a light hand (for fair skin) and are easily buildable for darker skin tones.

THE GOOD
reasonably-priced for the amount of product that you get
caters from beginners to professionals
good selection of shades
highly pigmented, blendable, and buildable
convenient packaging
lasta all day

THE BAD
not available in the Philippines
fallout (I don't mind but I put it here anyway)
packaging becomes dirty really easily
broke me out

OVERALL...
If this didn't break me out, I would have given it a perfect score. However, this is still a product that is worth the buy and definitely something that I would recommend (if you don't have sensitive skin)!

RATING:
4.5/5

Rainy afternoon, everyone! Classes have been suspended yesterday due to #LawinPH, and because of that, I had a lot of time to sleep, clean my room, cook food, and to do my school requirements. As I was cleaning, I came upon a paper bag filled with empty bottles of products that I've already used up. I figured it was finally time to start this blog's Product Empties series. Truth be told, I am someone who rarely ever uses a product long enough to finish it - but lo and behold, this year proved otherwise. It's a miracle, to be honest, and this is why I'm starting this series: so that I'll have a reason to finish up the things that I buy and share my honest thoughts with you. Let's start!

HAIR

L-R: Aveeno Hair Care Nourish + Dandruff Control Shampoo, Tresemme Split Repair Serum
Aveeno Hair Care Nourish + Dandruff Control Shampoo
I was looking for a shampoo that I could alternate with my sulfate-free shampoo as the latter tends to build up on the scalp. I decided to get this one because it claimed to moisturize the scalp and make hair healthier. It did a good job of keeping my hair feel clean without overly stripping it of moisture. It didn't seem to have made my hair oilier either.

Will I repurchase? While I do think this is a gentle anti-dandruff shampoo, I probably wouldn't repurchase it any time soon because it's expensive.

TreSemme Split Repair Hair Serum
I bought this product two years ago because I used to suffer from severe split ends. I don't remember why I never got around to using it; it was only a few months ago year I rediscovered this purchase. Even though this "split-sealing" serum seemed gimmicky, I still went ahead and tried it. I believe it did help a lot in strengthening the ends of my hair, though I still can't tell if it's able to help seal split ends. It's immediately absorbed by wet hair but I wouldn't apply this when it's dry because the formula is quite thick and heavy. However, even though the formula is thick, it is not sticky - rather, it glides on smoothly to hair.

Will I repurchase? I will not because I am not a fan of the smell and I realized that my hair isn't prone to split ends anymore (because I haven't chemically treated it in more than a year), though I do recommend it to those who are suffering from split ends.

L-R: Snoe Hair Heroes Super Fresh Sage Tea Tree & Peppermint Conditioner,  Lush Cosmetics American Cream Hair Conditioner
Snoe Hair Heroes Super Fresh 5-in-1 Sage Tea Tree & Peppermint Conditioner
I bought this conditioner because I thought that the sage tea tree and peppermint would be very good for the hair. It's worth mentioning that this is a multipurpose product - you can use it as a cleansing conditioner, as an after-shampoo conditioner, as a shaving cream, or even as a treatment mask.
I loved it at first - it gave off the right amount of minty feeling and it made my hair feel soft. However, I realized that it weighed my hair down and because of that, my usual waves would look like a frizzy mess.

Will I repurchase? Unfortunately, I will not because it is too silicone-y for my taste and it didn't make my hair look any better. It is also very pricey (Php 550+).

Lush American Cream Hair Conditioner
I was looking for a nice-smelling conditioner because I don't wash my hair everyday; I needed something that can make my hair smell good until the next day, which by the way, is kinda hard to do if you live in the city. After reading reviews of this product, I decided to buy it even if it created a huge hole in my pocket (Php 795). I didn't like it at first because my hair was harder to untangle than usual but I grew to love it. It's so lightweight; in fact, it accentuates the waviness of my hair. This being silicone-free might add to your skepticism but it's somehow able to make my hair soft and manageable. Have I mentioned that it smells like vanilla and honey? The scent lasts all day: although it doesn't linger until the next day, it doesn't make my hair smell bad either! The only downside is that I tend to use a lot more product as compared to other silicone-infused conditioners. So this means that if I use it everyday, it wouldn't be very economical in my part. Luckily for me, I don't (LOL!).

Will I repurchase? Yes! I even bought the biggest size of this because it's that good.

CLEANSING

L-R: Etude House AC Clinic Acne Foam Cleanser, Etude House One Shot Clean Mascara Remover
Etude House AC Clinic Acne Foam Cleanser
Etude House always gives out travel/sample sizes of their products when you reach a certain amount from your purchase. I brought this with me during a trip and I liked it. It smells like tea tree but it's not an awful scent. I like that it's foamy, cleans my face well, and doesn't leave off an awkward film once washed off. I haven't used it long enough for me to know it does help with acne.

Will I purchase? Yes, if the dermatologist will allow me to use a face wash of my choice.

Etude House One Shot Clean Mascara Remover

I've mentioned in my latest review that I use an Etude House mascara remover to take off extremely waterproof mascara: I was talking about this product. This remover doesn't melt off waterproof mascara in "one shot", but it's still so much better than the other removers that I've tried. Other people get turned off by the film of oil that it leaves; personally, I don't mind since I cleanse my face afterwards anyway. The only thing that I don't like about this product is that it's always out of stock!

Will I repurchase? Yes, it's a great makeup remover!

 RANDOM

L-R: Bath & Body Works Mad About You Eau de Toilette, Evolution of Smooth Hand Lotion in Berry Blossom
Bath and Body Works Eau de Toilette in Mad About You
I asked my grandma to buy this for me because I fell in love with the matching body cream that I received from my aunt back when she visited the Philippines. The Mad About You line smells like candy in my opinion, but it doesn't smell sickly sweet. Rather, it has a floral tone to it that makes it extremely wearable. I chose this instead of the body mist thinking that the scent would linger a lot longer, but I was wrong. I honestly think that the body mist performs just the same.

Will I repurchase? No, because it's not available in the Philippines, it's expensive, and it didn't perform as well as expected.

Evolution of Smooth Hand Lotion in Berry Blossom
I bought this from S&R. it came in with 2 other hand lotions and their corresponding lip balms. I am not a fan of the smell and the formula is very watery. It's convenient though as it's light and doesn't take up too much space.

Will I repurchase? No, there are much better hand creams in the market that aren't as expensive.

MAKEUP

Top: The Face Shop Designing Eyebrow Pencil in 04 Dark Brown
Bottom: Etude House Drawing Eye Brow in 03 Gray Brown
The Face Shop Designing Eyebrow Pencil in 04 Dark Brown
This is my first ever automatic eyebrow pencil, and I'm glad I bought it. This pencil is creamy but not waxy, and it has the right amount of pigmentation that wouldn't make you look like you have sharpie brows. It's easy to shape and fill-in the eyebrows with its slanted tip. It also comes with a spoolie which is very convenient.

Will I repurchase? Yes, it's my HG brow pencil!

Etude House Drawing Eye Brow in 03 Gray Brown
I wasn't planning on buying this but I had no other choice because TFS' eyebrow pencil was out of stock back then. They were extremely similar so I thought why not, it's a lot cheaper anyway. They have almost the same packaging and slanted tips. The only difference is that Etude House's is a lot creamier and so it's easier to overdo the eyebrows. It also breaks off badly! I broke off more product than I was able to actually use, which is extremely annoying.

Will I repurchase? Only if The Face Shop's eyebrow pencil is out of stock again.

Well, that's it for today's product empties! I hope you liked it and if you want me to do a review for any of these products, please let me know in the comment section down below! x

Japan is one of the fashion and beauty powerhouses of Asia. If you want to be unique and free to wear whatever you like without being judged by other people, the big cities in this country is where you might want to live in. In Japanese culture have I learned that being weird doesn't necessarily equate to having bad taste. In fact, weirdness is celebrated in this culture; such is the case of Igari makeup. What is igari, you say?
Source: beatrium.com
Simply put, Igari makeup is "hang over" makeup. It was popularized by artist Shinobu Igari, hence the name. It is supposed to mimic the look of someone who just woke up and is still a bit drunk. It may also mimic the look of someone who is sick. While the look itself does not look that weird, it is the reasoning behind it that makes it like so.

This look - characterized with coral pink highly-placed blush (directly below the eyes), a clear complexion, and natural eye makeup - is supposed to give girls an innocent look. Apparently, this seems appealing to men.
Source: knetizone.blogspot.com
While I'm not in love with the look for that reason, I do find this trend to be super cute. I have always been fond of flushed cheeks so I am quite drawn to this trend. I just don't understand why it never caught up globally. Why isn't Igari makeup as big as contouring?

Anyway, today I decided to recreate this look, and here are the results:

Sorry for my messy hair, I was trying to look as if I just woke up, ha ha. First, I focused on perfecting the skin by evening it out and concealing blemishes. I used a lighter base than my skin tone because Japanese women have really fair skin.
I used my pinky finger to apply eye brow powder because this makeup trend  doesn't require the characteristic of structured brows. I also used my fingers to apply eye color - the blush was used as an overall eyeshadow color then a golden shimmery eyeshadow was applied all over the lower lid and on the aegyosal (eyebags). So easy, right? I decided not to put eyeliner and mascara because I want my eyes to look as sleepy as possible.

I decided to put some faux freckles using the Etude House Play 101 Pencil though you can definitely skip this step.
Most of the pictures that I saw were girls sporting velvety lips. Since I didn't have a lipstick with that finish, I just decided to use a lip tint and set it with some transluscent powder.

As a girl who was born with short lashes and nonexistent lower lashes, plus the fact that I have oily lids, mascara was one of those things that I used to ignore when I first started using makeup. I find that they were a waste of time - no matter what I use, they just didn’t have any effect on my lashes. If they even had an effect, it was only momentarily until my lashes go stick-straight again; and if I’m unlucky, I’d look like a panda by the end of the day. However, I don’t share the same view anymore because I finally found a mascara that has worked wonders for me; it’s Etude House’s Lash Perm Curl Fix Mascara!

Price: Php 848
Expiration: 6 months after opening

Shade bought: Black

Net Wt.: 6.5g/0.22oz

Shades available: Black, Brown, Burgundy, Pink

Description

This is a curl fix mascara that completes powerfully curled up fine eyelashes for 24 hours with its strongly adhering Curl 24 hour Technology on drooped lashes.

Claims (from the Etude House website)

  • Curl every single lash, fix all day long: The "Curl 24HR Technology" delivers powerful performance to lift, define, and curl even tiny lashes for 24 hours.
  • Curl-fixed lashes for 24 hours: The "Curl 24HR Tech" lifts lashes up poerfully and fix the curl (Black only).
  • Dual jelly brush: Delicate and soft 'Dual Jelly Brush' pull all eyelashes even the tiniest lashes to curl and fix.
  • No smudge, no clump: With the powerful waterproof function to water, sweat, or sebum to keep curl for long and not to get smudged.
*Curl 24HR Technology: The new technology made of 'Perfect Lash Fixer' ingredient to make and fix lashes' curl for 24 hours (tested and certified by Elid Corp.)

The Wand

The wand, to me, is the selling point of this mascara. It is made of silicone which lessens the tendency of mascara to clump. The shape of the brush is unusual as well; it has a domed part and a flat part which has their intended purposes.
  • Flat Jelly: Combs lashes in zigzag to make lashes become easier to curl.
  • Jelly Dome: Curls lashes upward tightly and fixes 24 hours.
To be honest, the claims and wand seemed gimmicky at first but it does work. The wand is quite small and chunky which makes it hard to use especially on the inner and outer parts of the eye but I'm gonna give it to Etude House this time because the brush does what it promises to do.
I always mess up the lower lashes and the mascara tends to transfer on my mobile lid when it's still wet. Sometimes, I even get mascara on my nose bridge. But I guess, me not being careful has something to do with it.
Directions
  1. Organize lashes with the flat jelly part of brush starting from lash roots, brushing in a zigzag motion.
  2. Complete curled up, 360 degrees spread out fine lashes by gently brushing lash's upper, lower, front, and back parts with the jelly dome part of brush.
To be honest, I don’t follow the instructions, ha ha. I just usually use the flat jelly part of the brush to lengthen my lashes - this is perfect for natural days. I rarely use the dome jelly side because it tends to make my lashes look clumpy. However, for days when I want to volumize my lashes, I use the dome jelly side at the roots of my lashes and just apply it halfway. The result is volumized-yet-wispy lashes.

I find that I can apply 2 coats of this without my lashes looking like spider legs. The formula is especially great when it's still new. However, three to four months in, and you will find that the mascara clumps especially if you use the dome jelly side of the wand. It's probably an indicator that you need to get it replaced.

Thoughts

This mascara is what dreams are made of. It clings on to every little hair - the results are luscious lashes I never thought I could have. It stays on and it doesn’t budge! I swear, I took a bath while wearing this and while I lost some of the curl, the product pretty much stayed on. The only downside to it is that you need industrial-grade mascara remover (and a whole ton of patience) to completely take this off. I find that the mascara remover from Etude House is the best match for this. I can’t say that cleansing oils, micellar water, or even coconut oil works as great, unfortunately.

Pros:
> extremely waterproof
> zero smudge
> highly pigmented
> keeps curl longer than other mascaras (10-12 hours)
> secure packaging
> volumizing
> lengthening
> dries fast
> lightweight
> unique wand design
> formula did not dry up fast (I threw my first tube away after four months because it started becoming really clumpy but the formula was still pretty useable if watered down with eye drops)

Cons:

> hard to remove
> clumpy if not used properly
> expensive
> application tends to get messy

Will I repurchase? Definitely!

Do I recommend it? Yes, if you're looking for a mascara that will survive through heat and tears! No, if you loathe extremely waterproof mascara.

Verdict: 4.5/5

Blush is probably my most favorite thing next to pinkish-brown lip products. As a person who always looks pale and dead on the outside, I gravitate towards products that give a little hint of life just so people would stop asking me whether I had enough sleep (which most of the time, I do not sadly).

And because of this, it might come as no surprise that I would buy a brush to apply blush which is a necessity for me. This time, I decided to stray away from angled brushes and tried out Real Techniques' dome-shaped Blush Brush.

DESIGN
The Real Techniques' Blush Brush has a metallic-matte pink handle that contains the brand name and the brush name. Personally, I love the finish of the handle - it may be hot pink but it still looks sleek. The bottom part of the handle is rubberized and has a flat surface which allows it to stand on its own. This was intentionally designed so that users are able to store it without the need for brush holders and also to stop it from rolling around when placed on top of a flat surface. As a management student, the attention to user convenience really calls out to me.
BRISTLES
I have never felt a brush with bristles this soft. What I love most about it is that it doesn't feel scratchy. It picks up just the right amount of powder so that you wouldn't have to worry about looking like a clown; building up product is really easy with this brush though.
It is made of synthetic hair which makes it ideal for both cream and powder blush. Washing it is a breeze as synthetic hair in general are easy to work with. So far, I have not experienced any shedding.
But perhaps the selling point of this brush is its versatility. It's so fluffy that I like to use this for bronzing more than applying blush. I also like to use it to apply powder all over my face and/or to swipe away excess powder from baking. I wouldn't recommend using it for contouring though as you wouldn't be able to get a precise, chiseled look if that's what you're going for. However, if you are going for the more natural route, then this brush would work fine.

Real Techniques is already carried by Watsons Philippines but I bought mine from Uniqube (located at 3rd floor, University Mall, Taft Avenue, Malate, Manila) for Php 580. This brush originally retails for $9 (approx. Php 405). Php 580 may seem like a big step-up from the original price but I don't really mind since the seller had to take into account the shipping and slotting fees.

VERDICT
To conclude, I will go as far to say that this brush is one of the best brushes that I've been able to get my hands on. Its price may seem a little steep as compared to drugstore brushes alike but its multipurpose functions and quality makes up for it.

FINAL RATING: 4/5
